  20. To print a hardcopy of this file, at the DOS prompt, change to the
  21. directory where this file is and type :
  22.  
  23. PRINT TROUBLE.TXT  [ENTER]

  26. Below is a list of common problems and possible solutions:
  27.  
  28. BASIC TROUBLE SHOOTING:
  29.   -Try running BOOTDISK.EXE to make a bootdisk before playing the game.
  30.   -Check CD for dust or defective media                     
  31.   -Make sure the sound is set up correctly. Check that the SET BLASTER
  32.    line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file contains the proper setting. Then
  33.    run SETSOUND from the Longbow directory to set up the sound
  34.    correctly.
  35.   -Try running a VESA driver.  Either one that comes with your video 
  36.    card or a version of SciTech UNIVBE.  Please see the README.TXT for
  37.    information on SciTech.
  38.   -Try running the game with a video mode switch.  Using the 
  39.    command-line 'LB v' could possible correct some video problems.

  41. -----------------------------------------------------------------------
  42. 1. DOS4GW Crashes going into flight or when you type LB:
  43.   -Make sure you are running from the recommended bootdisk
  44.   -Check CD for dust or defective media                     
  45.   -Make sure the sound is set up correctly. Check that the SET BLASTER 
  46.    line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file contains the proper setting. Then run 
  47.    SETSOUND from the Longbow directory to set up the sound correctly.
  48.   -Try removing HIMEM.SYS from your bootdisk.  This line is in you
  49.    CONFIG.SYS file, type REM infront of it, for example: 
  50.    REM DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
  51.   -Try running a VESA driver.  Either one that comes with your video
  52.    card, or a version of SciTech UNIVBE.  Please see you video cards
  53.    documentaion or the README.TXT for information on SciTech.
  54.   -Try adding EMM386.EXE with no switches in the bootdisk's CONFIG.SYS 
  55.    file for example, add the following line: 
  56.    DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
  57.   -Try running the game with a video mode switch.  Using the 
  58.    command-line 'LB v' could possible correct some video problems.

  60. 2. Black screen when trying to access the options menu or not being
  61.    able to switch graphic resolutions:
  62.   -If you are running UNIVBE 5.2 (Display Doctor) then trying running
  63.    it with a -r switch, For example: UNIVBE -r
  64.   -Try running a VESA driver.  Either one that comes with your video
  65.    card or a version of SciTech UNIVBE.  Please see you video cards
  66.    documentaion or the README.TXT for information on SciTech.
  67.   -Try running the game with a video mode switch.  Using the 
  68.    command-line 'LB v' could possible correct some video problems.

  70. 3. Install program hanging at a percentage:
  71.   -Check CD for dust or defective media 
  72.   -Try installing the game through Windows 95
  73.   -On your bootdisk try moving the SMARTDRV.EXE line in the 
  74.    AUTOEXEC.BAT file after the MSCDEX.EXE line
  75.  
  76. 4. Install program detecting computer as 386 processor:
  77.   -The install program detects NextGen processors as 386 processors
  78.    therefore it will not allow you to install the game.  Please see
  79.    the information below on doing a Manual install.
  80.  
  81. 5. Diamond Viper PCI Video Cards:
  82.   -You must run VPRMODE VESA then UNIVBE before running the game. Once
  83.    in the game you will only be able to get VGA flight.
  84.  
  85. 6. ATI Video Cards: 
  86.   -You may need a specific version of UniVBE dependening on the 
  87.    particular ATI video card you are using. These cards may also need a 
  88.    new driver from ATI like the 3D XPRESSION does. Please contact ATI 
  89.    if you have any problems.
  90.  
  91. 7. Longbow Internal error #35: 
  92.   -Make sure you are running of the recommended bootdisk
  93.   -Try adding EMM386.EXE with no switches in the bootdisk's CONFIG.SYS,
  94.    For example add the following line: DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE
  95.  
  96. 8. STB Horizon 64 VLB & Diamond Viper VLB:
  97.   -Currently these cards do not work with Longbow.  We are looking into
  98.    this.
  99.  
  100. 9. Number 9 Imagine 128: 
  101.   -Running UNIVBE with this card will result in a white screen when you
  102.    reach the main base screen.  Do not run UNIVBE and the game will run
  103.    fine, although it may be a little slow.
  104.  
  105. 10. Ensoniq VIVO: 
  106.   -Longbow will run with this but the sound is REAL slow.  There is no
  107.    correction for this at the moment, but we are looking into this.
  108.  
  109. 11. Install program limited to drive letters:
  110.   -Longbows install program will not install to a hard drive labeled 
  111.    K: or higher.  If you wish to install to a drive after K:, please 
  112.    do a manual install as described below.
  113.  
  114. 12. Joystick stuck looking left: 
  115.   -If you are using a ThrustMaster joystick and a WCS Mark II throttle,
  116.    the joystick will "look left" if Longbow is set up for "ThrustMaster
  117.    FCS". This control combination must be set up as a 2-button joystick
  118.    and throttle the appropriate files loaded into the WCS for this
  119.    ThrustMaster setup to function correctly.
  120.   -If you have a Gravis Ultrasound sound card and a ThrustMaster FCS or
  121.    Wingman Extreme joystick, the analog hat on these sticks seems to 
  122.    have a conflict with the GUS and will constantly force the view to 
  123.    the left. Setting this up as a 2-button stick will solve this, at
  124.    the cost of hat-contolled view switching.
  125.  
  126. 13. Control problems running the game through Windows 95:
  127.   -Windows'95 does strange things to the joystick if the game is run in
  128.    a window. This can range from joystick "spikes" to an inability to
  129.    calibrate correctly. Longbow is a DOS game and should be run through
  130.    a shortcut to DOS on Win95 systems.
  131.   -On faster machines there may be a communication problem between the 
  132.    CPU and the game port on the sound card.  This can cause problems 
  133.    with calibration.  Using a speed adjustable game card ,which is 
  134.    specifically designed to run a joystick on fast machines, will fix 
  135.    this problem in most cases.
  136.   -Also, for any joystick problems, try calibrating the joystick in 
  137.    Windows 95 then running your shortcut.

  140. MANUAL INSTALL
  141.  
  142. Before doing the following, run SCANDISK and DEFRAG on the drive you 
  143. are going to install the game to. Please consult your DOS or 
  144. Windows 95 Manual on how to do this.
  145.  
  146. 1) First check for 110MB free on the hard drive.
  147.  
  148. Below  is how the install type will affect hard drive space used.
  149.             Total bytes used
  150. Low install         47,349,760
  151. Med. install         79,036,416
  152. High install         110,985,216
  153.  
  154. Note: These figures are after terrain decompression.
  155.  
  156. 2) There is a batch file that comes with the v1.08F Patch that will
  157. do the manual install, to use the manual installation batch file
  158. (MANINST.BAT) type:
  159.  
  160. MANINST [source(CD) drive:] [destination drive:] [directory]
  161.  
  162. For example: maninst d: c: games
  163.  
  164. In this example Longbow will be installed from D: drive (usually
  165. your CD-ROM) to C:\GAMES directory.
  166.  
  167. Please note:  The source and target drives must be specified,
  168. including the colon. These drives cannot be the same letter.  Also
  169. the source must be the drive that the Longbow disk #1 is in.  If
  170. the target drive is not a valid drive letter the game will install
  171. to the drive the batch file is run from.  If no directory is
  172. specified then Longbow will install to the default (JANES\LONGBOW).
  173.  
  174. 3) After the batch file is run you will need to specify the install
  175. size used in the options menu.  Once at the airbase use the ALT-O
  176. Key combination to open the wrapper options menu to set the install
  177. size. This is how it will affect hard drive space used.
